Culture Programme

It is essential to promote cooperation and cultural exchanges in order to promote the diversity of cultures and languages. In the past, the European Union had invested in a number of cultural programmes, like Kaleidoscope, Ariane, Raphael and Culture 2000.
In order to strengthen the cultural programmes, the European Commission has decided to gather all previous programmes in a single Culture Programme, which will cover the period from 2007 to 2013. The programme has been adopted both by the Council and the Parliament in December 2006. The Culture Programme is a single multi-annual programme for community measures.
The EU’s Culture programme (2007-2013) has a budget of €400 million for projects and initiatives to celebrate Europe’s cultural diversity and enhance our shared cultural heritage through the development of cross-border co-operation between cultural operators and institutions.

The Culture programme aims to achieve three main objectives: to promote cross-border mobility of those working in the cultural sector; to encourage the transnational circulation of cultural and artistic output; and to foster intercultural dialogue. For the achievement of these objectives, the programme supports three strands of activities: cultural actions; European-level cultural bodies; and analysis and dissemination activities.

- Literary translations

The support for literary translation is contributes to one of the key objectives of the programme: encouraging: the transnational circulation of cultural and artistic products and works.

This sub-category provides financial support for the  translation of literature from one European language into another. The translation projects may be submitted by independent publishers or publishing groups from participating countries.

The translation of ancient texts forming part of our literary heritage – including classic languages, such as Ancient Greek or Latin – are also eligible.
EU support for the actions is limited to half of the total eligible cost and is set at a maximum of Euro 60 000.

Grant applications may be made by public or private bodies with legal status. Their  principal activity must be in the cultural field and their registered office must be  based in one of the countries participating in the programme. They must have the financial and operational capacity needed to complete the action proposed.
