eContent plus programme

ARROW Project - www.arrow-net.eu

ARROW, the acronym for Accessible Registries of Rights Information and Orphan Works towards Europeana, is a project of a consortium of European national libraries, publishers (FEP is one of the partners) and collective management organisations, also representing writers – working through their main European associations and a number of national organisations – which has been launched in November 2008 and will last for 30 months."

ARROW is one of the projects selected among 102 ones presented in 2007 at the European Commissions eContentplus Programme which seeks to help make digital content in Europe more accessible, usable and exploitable.

ARROW aims in particular to support the EC's i2010 Digital Library Project by finding ways to clarify the rights status of orphan and out of print works, so they can be cleared for digitisation and inclusion in the Digital Library. The project also seeks to enhance the interoperability of rights information (i.e. exchange of information) between rightholders, agents, libraries and users. Solutions envisaged by the venture include the establishment of systems for the exchange of rights data, the creation of a registry of orphan works and a network of rights clearance centres. Key to achieving this objective is interoperability, standards deployment and stakeholder involvement.

elearning programmes

PRO-ACCESS Project - http://proaccess.euain.org/
The aim of this project is to find pragmatic solutions to provide educational content in the elearning value chain accessible to visually impaired people. The project will disseminate the best practices and guidelines stemming from the results of two EU funded projects: ORMEE and EU AIN (see below). These materials are intended for both the content producer market and for educational and training environments.
In particular the project will increase the possibility for visually impaired people involved in any educational process – whether pure eLearning or blended learning – to access course material on a timely basis, especially as digital files that can easily be used with PC and special devices.

EU AIN Network - www.euain.org
Given the widespread adoption of ICT within the publishing industries, there is a general interest in the creation and provision of well-formatted digital documents.
For those people who are dependent on accessible information, this interest is of central importance, and it is this convergence of interests that offers exciting opportunities for these different stakeholders. There is a strong demand from visually impaired persons to create material directly accessible.
EU AIN provides support, tools and expertise to enable them to provide accessible information.
One tool developed by the EU AIN Network is the Demonstrator.
This Demonstrator has been set up in order to illustrate the potential of accessible publishing whose concepts are underpining the EUAIN project. The Demonstrator can be used for producing different output formats on-demand, from the same well-structured input file.
